On our way home from school we pass by some mamas sitting
under a tree doing various things. Today they were pulling peanuts off the
plant and making big stacks of them. We stopped and were talking to them about
our work. They told us about how there are peanuts that you use to make boiled
peanuts. Then they asked us if we would like to buy some. They said a
bowl full was 1,000 ts (65 U.S. cents).
So we bought some. Turns out a bowl full is a bowl with a
mountain of peanuts on top. Then the oldest mama said to put more in the bag.
We ended up telling them to stop because there were so many peanuts. I could
not believe how many we were getting. So when we got home we weighed them and
it turned out to be 3.5 lbs. It was crazy. So this afternoon we made boiled
peanuts, and they were yummy!

This just reminded me of driving around the south (US) with my Grandparents as a kid and stopping whenever we spotted a little stand on the side of the road promising "hot boiled peanuts" and noting that it's actually pronounced "hot bawlled peanuts."
ReplyDeleteNice to know we'll have a taste of home in Africa when we get there. :)
